One of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs is access to financing. The Canada Small Business Financing Program (CSBFP) helps bridge that gap by making it easier for small businesses to secure loans from banks, credit unions, and other lenders.

This long-standing federal program shares the risk with financial institutions, which in turn helps small businesses access credit they might not otherwise qualify for.

What is the CSBFP?

The CSBFP supports for-profit small businesses with annual gross revenues of $10 million or less. It’s open to most sectors (excluding farming, charitable, or religious organizations).

Through the program, lenders can provide financing to help you:

  • Purchase or improve equipment
  • Buy or renovate real property (land and buildings)
  • Make leasehold improvements
  • Purchase intangible assets (like software, patents, franchise fees)
  • Cover working capital costs (day-to-day operating expenses)

Loan Details at a Glance

  • Maximum Financing: Up to $1.15 million total
    • $1 million for term loans (of which max $500,000 can be for equipment, leaseholds, or intangibles)
    • $150,000 for lines of credit (working capital)
  • Loan Terms:
    • Up to 15 years for term loans
    • Up to 5 years for lines of credit
  • Government Guarantee: The Government of Canada covers 85% of eligible losses; lenders retain 15% responsibility
  • Interest Rates: Set by each lender (can be fixed or variable within program limits). For example, Scotiabank currently offers Prime +5%

The 2022 Enhancements

Back in 2022, the CSBFP introduced important updates to stay relevant to modern business needs:

  • Coverage expanded to include intangible assets and working capital
  • A new line of credit option was added
  • Loan limits were increased

Three years later, these enhancements continue to make the program more flexible and useful for entrepreneurs.

How to Apply

The CSBFP is delivered through financial institutions (banks, credit unions, caisses populaires). Each has its own application process.

That means:

  • You will work directly with your bank or credit union.
  • Lenders will still review your credit history, business plan, collateral, and repayment ability.
  • If approved, your loan will be registered under the CSBFP, with the government providing the 85% guarantee.

Financing is often the biggest barrier for small businesses and start-ups. By reducing the risk for lenders, the CSBFP gives entrepreneurs a better chance at securing the capital they need to start, grow, or modernize their businesses.

💡 Tip: When approaching a lender, ask specifically about their CSBFP process and prepare a clear, realistic business plan to strengthen your application.

If you’re planning to invest in your business — whether that means new equipment, renovations, software, or simply covering operating expenses — the Canada Small Business Financing Program could be a resource worth exploring. Start the conversation with your bank or credit union to see if this program is right for you.
